The proper name for this area should be “Mediterranean pseudo-steppe area”, since it is the result of man-made activity, namely of extensive cereal farming. This is a semi-artificial habitat characterized by the existence of an agricultural mosaic that varies in time and space, endowing the landscape with its unique diversity and beauty!
The pseudo-steppe is formed by open, wide, treeless plains that stretch out into several counties of the Baixo Alentejo. The landscape is dominated by fields of dry land cereal, farmed in a rotation system with fallow lands frequently used as pasture by cattle.
Besides the pseudo-steppe habitat, it is also possible to find, in the SPA, smaller areas with holm oak montado, small olive groves, brushes and some wetlands near water courses.
