A JOURNEY TO THE BEGINNING OF NATIONHOOD
Beginning at the village of Namorados, next to a recovered windmill, this is a circular route. By the middle of this route there is a branch that goes through the Ribeira de Cobres and gives access to the São Pedro das Cabeças belvedere (the legendary location of the Ourique Battle fought in 1139). Along with many interesting species of fauna and flora offered by the areas of cereal steppe, montado and brushes, the leafy vegetation of the embankments of the Ribeira de Cobre enables the observation of birds typical of riverine areas as the rufous-tailed scrub robin, the kingfisher and, in the spring, the colorful bee-eater.
Trail Duration: 3h (or more, depending on the number and duration of stops)
Difficulty: average (10,4Km with a steep climb to the São Pedro das Cabeças Hermitage)
Best season of the year: the whole year except from July to September because of the heat. From November to April the crossing of the Ribeira de Cobres may be difficult because of the rain.

A LEAP TOWARDS THE ALTAR OF THE SKY
The narrow concreted way that gives access to the Salto (Leap) marks the beginning of this circular route. The Alcaria and São Barão mountains are the backdrop of the whole trail to the Senhora de Aracelis (this word is derived from “Ara-coeli”, that is, “altar of the sky”). The steep climb to this hermitage (276 m altitude) is very rewarding because of the surrounding landscape and because birds of prey as the Golden Eagle and the Iberian Imperial Eagle can be sighted, as well as flocks of Common Cranes (in the winter) feeding in the fields or in flight on their way to their dormitory.
Trail Duration: 3h (or more, depending on the number and duration of stops)
Difficulty: average (8,6km with a steep climb to the Sra. De Aracelis Hermitage)
Best season of the year: the whole year except from July to September because of the heat. In autumn and winter it should preferably be done by the end of the day when it is possible to see the cranes returning to their dormitories.

FREE PASS IN THE TOLL BOOTH OF CAMPOS DE OURIQUE
The trail begins and ends by the exit of Entradas, near the water depot. The itinerary crosses the Ribeira de Terges and has a branch that gives access to the Ribeira de Cobre, both tributaries of the Guadiana River. The cereal steppe is the stage of a considerable part of the itinerary. In it, many species of steppe birds can be sighted throughout the year. In the winter, this is an excellent site to watch the emblematic Great Bustard and large flocks of Crane feeding in the edges of old olive groves or montado areas.
Trail Duration: 5h (or more, depending on the number and duration of stops)
Difficulty: average (19km with a slope near the Ribeira de Cobres)
Best season of the year: the whole year except from July to September because of the heat. From November to April the crossing of the Ribeira de Terges may be difficult because of the rain.

A BLUE JEWEL IN THE PLAIN
This linear route begins next to the small football field and goes under the Southern Freeway (A2) through a passageway. Dominated by the cereal steppe, where there are often well-defined patches of recent forestation (eucalyptus and pine), this route is particularly good to watch several steppe birds as the Great Bustard, the Lesser Kestrel, the Little Bustard, the Montagu’s Harrier and the Roller, particularly during the spring and the summer. The trail ends near a small dam, an excellent site to watch aquatic birds as the Black-winged Stilt, the Grey Heron, the Eurasian Coot, the Mallard and the Little Grebe.
Trail Duration: 5h (or more, depending on the number and duration of stops)
Difficulty: average (18,7km round trip)

FROM THE VALE GONÇALINHO TO THE MONTE DAS PEREIRAS
This linear route is located in the Vale do Gonçalinho Estate, owned by the LPN, and in a adjoining estate, the Monte das Pereiras Estate. Beginning next to the Vale Gonçalinho Center for Environmental Education, this is an excellent route for watching steppe birds as the Montagu’s Harrier, the Black Kite (spring and summer), the Northern Lapwing, the European Golden Plover, the Red Kite, the Hen Harrier (winter). In March and April, it is not hard to see male of Great bustard (and even of Little Bustard) in their courtship displays! This route is also near a nidification tower built for Lesser Kestrels that, along with the Rollers, are very easy to see between the spring and the summer. The vegetable gardens of Vale Gonçalinho and Monte das Pereiras, as well as the crossing of the Barranco das Nogueiras, provide the opportunity to see many other birds, particularly passerines, birds of prey and corvids.

LONG TRAIL
This is a circular route with 43 km that begins and ends in the village of Carregueiro. It should be divided in two days.
In the first stage, from Carregueiro to Castro Verde (around 19 km), you will have the opportunity to see several typical Alentejo “montes”, in an endless plain landscape. Depending on the season of the year, you will be able to watch several species of steppe birds, particularly Great Bustards, Little Bustards, Black-bellied Sandgrouses, Quails (the whole year), Lesser Kestrels, Rollers, Montagu’s Harriers (Spring and Summer), Cranes, Northern Lapwings, Red Kites (Winter).
Once in Castro Verde you can take the opportunity to pay a visit to its cultural and historic heritage, taste Alentejo’s cuisine, do some shopping and spend the night.
In the second stage, leave Castro Verde to begin the route to return to Carregueiro (around 24 km). At the dam near the Monte Vale Gonçalo you will be able to watch some aquatic birds as Mallards and Eurasian Coots, as well as some amphibians and turtles. Once in Vale Gonçalinho estate, pay a visit to the LPN’s Vale do Gonçalinho Center for Environmental Education (where you can get informations) and pay attention to the birds flying over it, for example Lesser Kestrels and Rollers. The next stop is Entradas, one of the most beautiful villages of the region, with several interesting sites of religious heritage.
The beginning and the end of the route’s last stage takes place in the concrete road connecting Entradas to Carregueiro. On the way you can go into some dirt trails to watch more birds, particularly steppe birds.
Difficulty: average (43km)
Best season of the year: the whole year except from July to September because of the heat. From March to April it is necessary to be careful because of the nesting season of the birds, avoiding the sites where courtship displays are taken place and/or nesting sites (as the surroundings of abandoned houses in “montes”, nesting walls/towers). From November to April, the crossing of streams can be somewhat difficult or even impossible due to rainfall. Don’t take any chances!

MEDIUM TRAIL
Beginning at the CEAVG, the route is 27 km long. In the first stage, covering around 4 Km until the Ribeira de Cobres, several species of steppe birds can be watched, mostly Great Bustards, Little Bustards, Black-bellied Sandgrouses, Quails (the whole year), Lesser Kestrels, Rollers, Montagu’s Harriers (Spring and Summer), Cranes, Northern Lapwings, Red Kites (Winter).
After crossing the Ribeira de Cobres, you will arrive at the Apariça dam, a site of interest to watch aquatic birds as herons, ducks and grebes. Around 2 km after the dam is São Marcos daAtaboeira, a village that invites the visitor to pay attention to some details of its traditional architecture, particularly its 17th century church.
At the exit of the village, in the direction of Entradas, the Ribeira de Cobres crossing area has high landscape interest, being followed by a few unfortunately abandoned beautiful houses in the “montes” of Alentejo. The route to Entradas (8 km) is highly diverse, crossing areas of montado, olival and cereal pseudo-steppe.

ROUTE OF LANDSCAPE INTEREST
This route begins in Entradas, near the water tower, in a rural road. Since it has small traffic, it is safe to park there and make some good observations. Stop near the small Ribeira de Terges dam to watch aquatic birds. The following kilometers have wide horizons that allow the observation of several steppe birds. There are good chances to see Great Bustards (particularly during the spring) along the trail; in the winter, flocks of Northern Lapwings and European Golden Plovers are very frequent. In the middle of the route the road is sided by scattered holm oak montado with high abundance of brushes where it is possible to watch insectivore birds as tits and nuthatches. Among the birds of prey there are diurnal as the Red Kite and the Black-winged Kite. Further ahead you arrive at the Ribeira de Cobres, a place where you can take a longer break. Along with the birds and the vegetation, an attentive look will discover traces of Otter. After the break you carry on along the road while the landscape shows here and there some traces of the kilometers already covered. Once the route ends and you arrive at São Marcos de Atabueira take the national road 123 (EN123) toward Castro Verde or Mertola. The chance of sighting a flock of Great Bustards flying or near the ground is large, renewing the thrill of the previous experience.
Difficulty: easy (7km)
Best season of the year: the whole year except from July to September because of the heat. From November to April, the crossing of the Ribeira de Cobres can be somewhat difficult or even impossible due to rainfall. Don’t take any chances!
