Heritage and Culture

The historic and cultural heritage of the Castro Verde region is heavily marked by agriculture.

Cereal farming and animal husbandry have been, for millennia, the distinctive traits of the region’s agriculture. Their importance is manifested in the region’s gastronomy where bread and lamb play a central role, as well as olive oil and aromatic herbs – ingredients typically used in Baixo Alentejo’s cuisine.

The “montes” stand out within the region’s cultural heritage, characterized by rural houses built in a traditional way (“taipa” or rammed earth) on grounds mainly occupied by extensive cereal farming in dry land regimen and livestock farming, with small vegetable gardens near the main house.

Another unique element is the musical richness of the land where choirs of Alentejo’s “cante”, accompanied by the “campaniça“ guitar, the voices in dispute and the “baldão” (a song dueling practice in Alentejo) are widely appreciated.

Furthermore, the region has a rich history filled with legends going back to ancient peoples as the Romans, as well as the mythical Battle of Ourique that took place ate São Pedro das Cabeças.

The archeological inheritance of these peoples and the architectural heritage of more recent centuries are another of the interesting cultural aspects of the region to be explored by visitors.
