Markets, festivities and pilgrimages are an indispensable element of the lives of the Campo Branco people. Every village has its religious or popular festivity in which the buildings are embellished, masses celebrated, processions and dances organized.
The (yearly or monthly) markets and fairs are occasions to show products, to meet and be with people. In them people buy clothes, shoes, trinkets, produce, rattles and collars for cattle and many, many other things. The centuries-old Feira de Castro is considered the largest fair in the South of the country and takes place in the third weekend of October; it is the most representative of the fairs in its call to trade and to meet and be with thousands of visitors; it is also an occasion in which Alentejo’s “cante”, the “campaniça” guitar, the dispute and the “baldão” are always present.
Other festive moments accompanying the everyday lives of these people is the traditional “Dia da Espiga” on the first Monday after Easter and the lamb lunch in the field on May 1st.
