Ethics and Code of Conduct

When visiting the region:
. Choose the least pollutant means of transportation (take the public transportation, ride bicycles while on site) and try to compensate for your greenhouse gas emissions (for exemple, by supporting local nature conservation activities);
. Buy the services you will need from local agents (transportation, guides, housing, meals, etc.);
. Try to get information regarding the licensing of the local guides and companies you are considering using and whether or not they follow a code of ethics while providing their services;
. Acquire products from local artisans and do your shopping locally;
. Choose already existing theme trails and routes in the region;
. Respect the locals, their ways of life and traditions.

When going on a route:
. Avoid areas identified as environmentally sensitive and choose already existing routes;
. Go in small groups (up to 15 persons);
. Always keep your distance from the animals you see and make your observations in the least time possible;
. During the breeding season avoid stopping near the abandoned houses in the “montes”, since they may be nesting sites for some birds. Otherwise, you may trigger the failure of the breeding season;
. Avoid “shortcuts” and follow the main pathways to prevent stepping on the vegetation and on nests on the ground (particularly in the spring) or scare the birds from their nests;
. Minimize the noise and any behavior that disturbs the quiet of the site (use a low tone of voice, choose equipment that produces low noise, do not run, etc.);
. Respect the signs you find as well as the assets and the private property, asking for the owner’s permission when entering their estate;
. Close the gates and barriers you open. Be particularly careful with electric fences, using the rubber handles to open and close them;
. Go around the farmed fields and do not jump over fences and walls;
. Keep your distance from livestock and stray dogs and take care;
. When seeing other visitors wait until they finish their activity. If your pass by each other, keep minimum contact to avoid making noise;
. Carry your garbage and deposit it in the proper containers;
. Take photos and not plants, animals or any kind of geological samples. Leave only your footsteps and take home the good memories!

When taking photos of birds:
. Be as discrete as possible and always keep your distance;
. Get information and use shelters or hideouts to watch the birds of the region;
. Use natural light, do not use “flash”;
. Remember that the well-being of the animals and the preservation of the habitats are more important than a photo!

Other things you can/should do:
. If you see any irregularity contact the authorities;
. When finding threatened/sensitive/fragile species or sites inform the nature conservation authorities and do not share the information with others;

If you find a wounded animal:

1 – Avoid disturbing it by minimizing noise and contact with people.

2 – Contact immediately one of the following authorities:

SOS Ambiente e território: 808 200 520
SEPNA-GNR: 217 503 080
The nearest Natural Park or Protected Area
The nearest Animal Recovery Center

3 – If you need to handle the animal, use a towel or a cloth to cover its head (this prevents visual stimulation, thus calming it down) and put it in a box fit to its size with holes so that it may breathe.
