Because they shelter a number of birds of high conservationist importance, steppe areas are environmentally sensitive. The adoption of practices to minimize impacts caused in any activity within them is of highest importance to safeguard the biological diversity (flora and fauna) and the functioning of these ecosystems.
The tolerance of birds to human presence is dependent on the species and the season of the year. Therefore, it is necessary to adopt the best behavior to avoid disturbances of the animals. Although the breeding season is the most sensitive period for any bird, it is also necessary to consider the conditions and specificities of the migration (both in autumn and in spring) and wintering periods of the species.
In short, your presence in these areas should be as discrete as possible in order to avoid changes in the animal’s behavior (both wild and domesticated) or damages to the surroundings.
When going on a guided tour:
. Follow the main trails, keep close to LPN’s supervisor and follow his/her instructions;
. Minimize noise and behavior that may disturb the animals (particularly birds);
. Carry all your garbage with you and/or deposit it in appropriate containers;
. Loose dogs are usually harmless but take the necessary precautions;
. Although the livestock is usually tame, it does not like its offspring to be approached by strangers. Therefore, always keep a considerable distance to avoid disturbance;
. Take your pictures and do not collect samples and specimens. Leave only your “footprints” and take the good memories home!
When using the photo hideouts:
. Always go in and out of the hide out accompanied by a LPN staffer and follow his/her instructions;
. Keep silent to avoid disturbances to the fauna and ensure the success of the activity;
. Do not remove the black curtains covering the hideout Windows so that the inside of the hideout is not seen by the birds;
. Do not smoke or use your cell phone inside the shelter (except in emergency situations and, in such cases, you should keep your cell phone in silent mode);
. Leave the hideout as you found it.
