TALE 1:
THE ADVENTURES OF MRS: BERTA, SAMSON AND JULIAN
This is the story of the three most emblematic birds of the cereal steppe: Mrs. Berta, the great bustard, Samson, the little bustard, and Julian, the lesser kestrel. Its spring time in the steppes of Alentejo and with it birds are once again beginning to prepare to raise their offspring. However, the news of a threat to their habitat arrives to spread unrest among the steppe birds …

TALE 2:
THE ADVENTURES OF SPOTS & BUI
What do an Iberian lynx and a black vulture have in common? Spots and Bui face the incredible challenge of surviving in territories increasingly changed by human action. The adventures of these two characters show us how their life in the Mediterranean forests is and the threats they face.

THE PERLIMPIMPIM IN THE MAGICAL STEPPE
The PERLIMPIMPIM tell us the story of the three most emblematic birds of the magical steppe: Mrs. Berta (great bustard), Julian (lesser kestrel) and Samson (little bustard). How are these birds? What sounds do they make? Let’s sees what their beaks, feathers, and eggs look like. Let’s search for them in the field and get to know the site where they live, feed and nest.

Which birds inhabit the steppe? What do they eat? How do they reproduce? Where do they nest? What sounds do they make? To travel the trails of the steppe is the best way to get to know this habitat and its biodiversity.
Description: Completion of a small route (1km) in the Vale Gonçalinho estate to watch steppe birds; Playing of educational games.
Target public: Preschool children and students of the 1st and 2nd cycles of the basic level.

BIODETECTIVES IN ACTION
A biodetective is a biodiversity investigator! The riverside seems to be the ideal setting to begin this investigation. Properly equipped with the “Biodetective kit”, come unravel the secrets of the Vale Gonçalinho biodiversity!
Description: Completion of a small route along the Riverside at the Vale Gonçalinho estate to observe animals and plants and collect and identify samples using magnifying glasses, field guides and notebooks.
Target public: Preschool children and students of the 1st and 2nd cycles of the basic level.
Duration: 2h

What do owls eat? Where do they live? What are their ecological adaptations? What is their importance for the ecosystem’s balance? Given their nocturnal habits, owls are little known and are frequently associated with some myths.
Description: Introduction to nocturnal birds of prey and analyses of their regurgitations. This is an activity intending to raise awareness to the importance of the preservation of nocturnal birds of prey.
Target public: 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycles of the Basic Level.
Duration: 2h

Are soils all equal? How is the soil formed? How much time does it take forming? What is its importance and what are the threats to its conservation? Soil is an important natural resource that it is urgent to preserve!
Description: Collecting samples and experiences with different types of soil – texture, permeability and erosion.
Target public: Students of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycles of the Basic Level.
Duration: 2h

WITH AN EYE ON THE STEPPE BIRDS
Equipped with binoculars, spotting scopes and filed guides, we begin the pedestrian trail from Vale Gonçalinho into the steppe. Throughout the route it is possible to see the most emblematic steppe birds of the Castro Verde region – great bustards, little bustards, kestrels and harriers, along with many others.
Description: Introduction to steppe birds and completion of the pedestrian route (2km) at the Vale Gonçalinho to watch the steppe birds.
Target public: 3rd cycle of the Basic Level and High school.
Duration: 2.5 h

The technical-pedagogical support manual to teachers contains several initiatives that allow to deal with the theme of conservation of the Castro Verde cereal steppe and its birds, as well as to put a visit to the CEAVG into context.

“Teacher Support Manual”

In a playful and pedagogic fashion, the activity notebooks of the CEAVG provide information about the cereal steppe and, particularly, the steppe birds to young people.


Containing specific information and related challenges, these are excellent learning tools both in classroom context and outside it, for the young people’s everyday or their vacation period.
