Besides providing logistic support to several of LPN’s projects in Baixo Alentejo, the CEAVG promotes different activities to raise awareness and empower the region’s population and visitors regarding the environment and to preserve the Castro Verde steppe ecosystem.
Mainly aimed at raising awareness among the youth both inside and outside the school, the CEAVG carries out an educational program directed to several educational stages (from the preschool to higher education) addressing subjects as the preservation of the cereal steppe and its birds, desertification and rational water use.
It also develops several projects and actions together with different institutions of the local community, establishing a nexus between the populations and nature in medium to long term work.
On an annual basis, the CEAVG also serves as the point of reception and information to hundreds of visitors from around the world attracted by the diversity and quantity of birds in the region. It also carries out several environmentally themed initiatives as tours, bird ringing sessions and species censuses.
The CEAVG also provides support to several technical-scientific initiatives, particularly from national and international research units, and receives many trainees and autonomous researchers who choose Castro Verde to develop their work in areas as applied biology, landscape ecology, agricultural sciences and sustainable tourism.
